Our beloved Queen Charlotte, played by India Amarteifio & Golda Rosheuvel, is a woman who, while being so sure of herself, still finds ways to be a better wife, mother and leader of her country. She is a strong willed person who seldom backs down from challenges even if it means being forced into an arranged marriage she’s made few attempts to escape from. Despite the difficulties and inconveniences of her life she remained curious, increasingly more cunning and intentional in her pursuits of true love, legacy and rulership.
Charlotte could not be Queen Charlotte without the help of Lady Danbury. A woman smarter than anyone would give any credit for, played by equally impressive Arsema Thomas & Adjoa Andoh. For her character to be played by two highly intelligent women really speaks to how intentional Shonda Rhimes is in creating captivating stories and characters. Lady D, is also a woman forced into an arranged marriage; she had the unfortunate luck of marrying an old insecure frog who could not see past his shallow quest for white acceptance.
Despite her geriatric 2 pump chump husband she made sure that the pieces on her board left her the queen of her game. Lady D certainly knew how to play and teach it well. So much so she had our beloved Farmer George’s mother, Princess Augusta, bargaining with her for power Blacks wouldn’t even dare request.
Farmer George, I mean our beloved King George, played by Corey Mylchreest, is a truly troubled but well meaning King. From the time we were introduced to him refusing to hoist Charlotte over that wall until we cried watching him hide from Venus under the bed, George tried his very best to be the best he could possibly be.
We loved George for everything he was and was not and was heartbroken every time he felt failure or defeat in his efforts to be healed. Diagnosis and treatment of mental illness at that time was complete inhumane torture and im sure was worse than what we saw. King George deserved so much more than what he was offered for treatment and Queen Charlotte fought tooth and nail to protect his sanity and humanity in the thick of it.
All the circumstances surrounding the Queen Charlotte series is a matter of obligation and sacrifice. The queen’s marriage was born out of function, to racially unify a supremely divided nation. If only love were enough; Interracial marriages would solve all of the world’s problems yet evidently it does not. Despite, royal blood and aristocratic status, in Lord Danbury’s death, his son was nearly denied his title because there were no laws in place to protect such asset for Blacks in this new “unified” country, Even Charlotte was expected to do her duty and be happy for the sake of unity ordered by the British Empire.
Everyone sacrificed the love they thought they wanted for the love they were given because it was expected for them to do so, with the exception of Violet, whose daughter eventually marries the Duke of Hastings.
Lady Danbury despite all of the wonderful things life was able to afford her, she was never really able to behold the romance she deserved but was able to find it within herself. Queen Charlotte grew to love someone she believed hated her, by virtue of his own insecurities, and sacrificed peace of mind. And how can I forget the secret romance of Brimsley and Reynolds, ugh.
We love Queen Charlotte because she loved as hard as we would want anyone to love us through our madness. We love Lady Danbury because we admire her ability to see the bigger picture despite all odds. And we love our Farmer George because despite the madness we still know what it feels like to be crazy, in love and wanting to be better than we were before no matter how bad it hurts.
